VILLAGE BONFIRE & FIREWORKS DISPLAY 2009 As the nights draw in its suddenly time to start thinking about the Village Bonfire once again. As is now traditional, the event will take place on the actual day, Thursday November 5th at Shepley Cricket Club. The fire will be lit at 6.30pm and the wonderful fireworks display will start at 7.00pm. Gates open at 5.45. Anyone with wood to burn can bring it up to the Cricket Club from Monday, October 20th. Unfortunately, we cannot arrange transport. Please note that we cannot accept foam-filled items such as mattresses, sofas or armchairs: it is illegal to burn them. Please do not bring metal or glass items for obvious reasons it is not a tip! On the night there will be a variety of great hot food available, with something for everyone. The Club bar will be open. As always, the priority will be safety. The fire and fireworks will be roped off and a large number of volunteers will act as stewards to prevent any accidents. Additional lighting will be put up for the event and First Aid cover will be in place. The Police will also be in low-key attendance for the first time, reflecting the growing size of the event. A reminder to everyone that there is no parking at the cricket ground and severe parking restrictions on Marsh Lane on the night. Please leave the car at home! Visitors should also remember that it is illegal to bring your own fireworks even sparklers to a public event. Please respect this law for safety reasons. Finally, buy your tickets in advance. Experience of previous years shows that ticket holders walk straight in, whilst those wanting to pay on the door have to queue. Tickets will be on sale at local shops and pubs from mid-October onwards. The prices are £4.00 (Adults) and £2.00 (Under 15s); infants are free.

RECORD CROWD FOR 2007 VILLAGE BONFIRE
A record crowd of around 2300 people flocked to Marsh Lane for the fifth Village Bonfire to be held at the Cricket Club. The rain from earlier in the day thankfully disappeared and visitors enjoyed a crisp, breezy evening.
As normal, the fire was huge and mightily impressive, keeping out the cold from half way across the field. The fireworks display just keeps getting better and Howard Sykes, Mike Milner and their team produced a spectacular show, crowned by a magnificent finale that drew a thoroughly deserved round of applause from the spectators.
Safety is always the main concern for the organisers and, once again, there were no reported problems. Security increases year-on-year and, thankfully, we have yet to have any incidents requiring the first-aid team to be called into action.
This major Shepley event cannot take place without the hard work and goodwill of many individuals around the village, not all of whom have connections with the Cricket Club. So a big thank you for everyone who collected and delivered wood, built the fire, put up fences and lighting, loaned equipment, cooked stews and chillies, served food and drink, acted as stewards, collected litter, sold tickets or contributed in any other way.
Finally, the Cricket Club would like to say a few words about the individual(s) who stole one of the brand new generators bought to improve safety lighting along the lane leading to the Club; unfortunately the words we would like to say could not be printed in a family publication such as this!
See you next time: Wednesday November 5th 2008, same place, same time.
BUILDING THE BONFIRE
Building the fire is a huge and difficult task, particularly as it gets bigger & better each year. The photographs below are from 2004.
