Shepley v Skelmanthorpe

Drakes Huddersfield League Premiership

Saturday 18th April 2009

Marsh Lane, Shepley

A tale of two Glovers ended with Shepley losing a wonderful game of cricket by two runs at a cold but sunny Marsh Lane, in front of an excellent first day crowd.  When the fixtures threw up the return of last season's leading Shepley wicket taker, Craig Glover, for the first game following brother Danny's appointment as captain, you just knew that the brothers would take centre stage.  And so it proved.  Skelmanthorpe batted first on an excellent pitch and struggled against the new ball attack of Danny Glover and the unlucky Romain Grenville, who found the edge regularly.  Danny, however, was making his mark, ending with 7-64 off 16 top class overs.  He was well supported, particularly by off-spinner SP Singh who took the other wicket as Skelmanthorpe ended on an about-par 226-8, led by Tim Sykes with 74 and the irrepressible Max Joice with 46.

Shepley's reply got off to an excellent start as SP Singh and Sam Haigh (25) put on 74 for the first wicket.  Singh played superbly to show what a good signing he has been, scoring a classy 71.  Romain Grenville (33) and Ashley Brothers (34) accelerated though an entertaining middle order stand to leave the match well balanced, before Danny Glover came to the wicket for the critical phase of the innings.

With two overs left, Shepley needed 7 to win with two wickets left; Danny Glover facing and, naturally, brother Craig bowling his last over with figures of 0-86.  Danny took four off the second ball to put Shepley on the brink of victory, but... next ball Danny was bowled by Craig, leaving young Chris Cox to come to the wicket.  An immaculate forward defensive shot off his first ball augured well, but inevitably a Glover had the last word as Chris was bowled off the fifth ball of the over to leave Skelmanthorpe winners by two runs.
