Scholes v Shepley

Drakes Huddersfield League Premiership

Saturday 4 July 2009

Chapelgate, Scholes

Missing Tom Denton, whose season is now over due to footballing commitments with Huddersfield Town, Shepley pulled off a great win at league leaders Scholes.  Batting first on a greenish pitch, Shepley were soon in trouble at 16-3.  SP Singh was run out looking for an unlikely single, Sam Haigh top-edged a pull, and Tim Rees was caught behind.  Nigel Hoyle (31) and a circumspect Romain Grenville (12) took the score up to 51, before Hoyle was bowled and Grenville got the sort of lbw decision that is politely called 'unlucky'.  Danny Glover (35) played well but, when Bandula Don Ranjith went cheaply and Ashley Brothers tried one big shot too many, the tail looked exposed.  However Sam Denton (28*) and Steve Sullivan (19) played their best innings of the season as Shepley finished on an unlikely 174-9.

In reply Scholes were soon in trouble themselves.  Danny Glover (4-53) tore into the top order to leave the home side on 11-2.  The similarities with the Shepley innings continued as a good stand between Smith and Latif, was ended by two wickets in Ranjith's (4-46) first over, to leave Scholes on 51-4.  Glover got rid of Latif shortly afterwards, just before a heavy shower threatened to end the game.  Fortunately the skies brightened and Scholes rebuilt their innings and began to look possible winners, but Ranjith and Singh held their nerve and the leaders fell 18 runs short with the last pair at the crease.
